⚾ Cache student to represent Comanche Nation in Atlanta Braves Native Showcase

(KSWO) - “Super excited and kind of shocked that they picked me and it’s just a huge honor to be able to show off and represent myself, my tribe, my family,” said Leland Kowena, a member of the Comanche Nation and pitcher for the Cache Bulldogs. “They only chose 50 Native Americans, so I’m super hyped that I’m, I’m one of them.”
Baseball has been a massive part of Kowena’s life and he was a big part of the Cache’s success, including winning the Bo Bowman Tournament this year, helping guide them to an 18-15 record this season!
But, more important than the game, his connection with the Comanche Nation transcends the game of baseball, something he and his family are proud of!
“It’s been a part of my life since, you know, I was a kid,” Kowena said. “My dad’s always pushed me to learn more about my culture, so it’s just, I don’t know, a big part for me.”
Playing on a big league field is something only a few athletes get to achieve, but he gets to do more than just play, he gets the full MLB experience!
“Three-day experience. The first day, they’re going to take us to a dinner and we have to dress formal,” Kowena shared. “And then the second day will be like a camp kind of thing. So we’ll be able to practice, work with the coaches and then the third day we play a showcase game. So, that’s it. Yeah, it’s very big. I’m excited to meet, you know, Atlanta Braves coaches and meet other Natives from around the United States.”
In just over a week’s time, Leland will get to share the same field as some of his idols like Ronald Acuna who has been his favorite player since he was a kid and this opportunity is a dream come true for the Cache baseball star.
“I’m excited to be able to play on a big league field. That’s the main thing,” Kowena stated.
