How many coaches at your school have their CDL?

1. I am one of 4 at a 5A school that have a CDL.
2. If I drive, I get seat time. If it’s for a sport I don’t coach or if for another activity, I get paid by the hour.
3. Our district doesn’t require coaches to get a CDL, which is why I probably won’t renew mine, which brings me to my answer for #4.
4. I’ve been forced to drive a route a few times this year. After the last one, I told them it was the last one and that they can’t force me to drive them. They haven’t asked again since, so we’ll see.

6A football coach 12/20 coaches (8th, 9th, JV/ Varsity) have our CDLs. Nobody is forced to get it. We get paid per trip. We aren’t forced to drive routes, but we often drive for other activities because we are available and want to support them as they support us.

5A school.
1) 6 Football coaches, 4 Basketball coaches, 1 Wrestling, 4 baseball, 5 track
2) We get paid per trip if you're coaching it. If you drive for another sport its window time
3) They encourage us to get it
4) Speaking for football, we try to help out when we can with routes (money is good) or other sports if needed

I am at a metro area 5A school:

1. Including myself, 5 coaches on the football staff currently have their CDL, none in boys basketball,1 in girls basketball, 1 in wrestling, 2 in track and field, 1 in baseball.

2. We get per trip when we drive for the sport you are coaching and hourly if you drive for another sport or activity.

3. Technically our district does not require coaches to get their CDL, but at my school our HC/AD "encourages" (insist) coaches to obtain their CDL.

4.  We don't drive bus routes, our district has plenty of route drivers for that.  On the flip side, they would rather coaches drive to athletic events so the school's athletic department doesn't have to pay a route driver to transport kids to a game.

Class A school:

1. All coaches have a CDL


2. No, but we get paid to drive for sports we don't coach or any other activities that are not part of our extra duties.


3. No, but strongly encouraged.

4. Only on rare occasions that we are short handed, all of us coach multiple sports or have off season workouts when we aren't coaching.

I know thing one they have done to encourage coaches to get their CDL is eliminating the "Pre-Trip" part of the examination process. That was a major turn-off for coaches in getting their CDL.

Another question I'd like to hear answer too on top of that is how many lower class schools do lay coaching?

I’ve heard coaches here in SE Oklahoma say the process is ridiculous. Only one guy down here does the test and he is in Idabel. Coaches towards Antlers and Hugo have to make substantial drives to even do the written exams.
