... Top OKC area wrestling teams
Choctaw: The Class 6A Yellowjackets qualified for dual state Thursday. Sophomore Cash Holman is one of their top wrestlers, and he placed second in the 138-pound division at the JHM Invitational in Yukon on Saturday.
Edmond North: The Huskies won the Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference Tournament this month and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dual Classic in December, an event held at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater that included some of the best programs in the nation. Edmond North beat Stillwater in the finals. The Huskies have a stellar lineup and five conference champions — Hunter Hollingsworth (132 pounds), Joseph Jeter (138), Layton Schneider (144), Oscar Williams (215) and Ricky Thomas (285).
Mustang: Will Delk is in his first year as Mustang’s coach after spending the previous three seasons at Edmond Memorial. The Class 6A Broncos don’t have the big names they’ve had in recent years, but they still qualified for dual state.
Piedmont: The Wildcats qualified for the Class 5A dual state tournament last week. Among those in the lineup is junior Cash Donnell, who won the Class 6A 113-pound state title and went undefeated last season.
Stillwater: The Pioneers have a bunch of stars, most notably 132-pounder Cael Hughes, a three-time state champion who has yet to lose a high school match. Stillwater also got a huge addition this month. Brayden Thompson, FloWrestling’s top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 182 pounds and an Oklahoma State signee, has transferred to the school from Lockport, Illinois.
Tuttle: The Tigers have the top program in Class 4A and hold state records for most consecutive dual state and state tournament victories. They’ll attempt this season to win their 14th straight dual state title and 15th straight state tournament crown.
Westmoore: The Jaguars didn’t qualify for dual state but have shown promise this season. They placed third behind Stillwater and runner-up Edmond North at the JHM Invitational. Sophomore 120-pounder Devon Miller was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler and also won the COAC title. “We’re still a pretty young team,” Westmoore coach Will Evans said. “We only graduate three seniors from this team. And our junior high has been good the last couple of years, so it’s kind of been a process.”
Yukon: The Millers won the District 6A-4 title, finishing ahead of Edmond Santa Fe, Norman and Westmoore. They had three wrestlers place third at the JHM Invitational — Dillon Ryan (138), Bryce Goucher (175) and Austin Spangler (185). Hayden Wright (113) placed second. ...
