The Oklahoma Coaches Association is close to canceling its biggest events.
The annual clinic and All-State competitions, set to begin July 25 this year and run through July 30, are close to being canceled, barring a change in the situation surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, executive director Milt Bassett said.
“Unless something changes before our May 20th board meeting, we likely won’t have the All-State week this year,” Bassett said.
Bassett expects the OCA’s board of directors to cancel the clinic and All-State events during the meeting.
The OCA has held conventions every year since 1935, the past 12 coming in Tulsa. The convention is held at the Southern Hills Marriott and Crowne Plaza hotels with All-State athletes staying at dorms on Oral Roberts’ campus.
Yet this year, ORU won’t be able to house athletes, which is the OCA’s first problem. ORU’s campus is locked down, and it’s expected to remain that way throughout the summer. That means the OCA doesn’t have a place to house 200-300 athletes, with no place to go.
“We’re not going to do anything that could jeopardize those athletes,” Bassett said. “We don’t want to even risk anyone getting sick.”
The OCA will face a loss in revenue if the clinic is canceled. Most of its income is from member dues and clinic registration fees.
Bassett said the OCA still plans to purchase All-State rings and print programs for the athletes and their families, which will cost about $30,000.
The OCA planned on hosting its All-State events for all sports this season, including spring sports that didn’t get to complete their seasons. Coaches in those sports were going to use past years results and vote on athletes who would be eligible for the All-State competitions in tennis and golf.
