In my time covering high school football I have seen this quite a few times where a team does not have enough to play both at the 8-man and 11-man level many different times. The Wewoka Tigers was in this situation going into their week 4 matchup against Mounds, due to different reasons they wasn’t gonna have enough to play until two senior girls stepped up and those two would be Natalie Davis and Callie Ramsey.
Callie Ramsey and Natalie Davis are two remarkable young women who volunteered to play football for our program when they heard we may have to forfeit do to being short players due to multiple circumstances out of our control, These two battled together all fast pitch softball season playing mostly with eight due to lack of participation. They understood being what it meant to be an underdog and overcome. They came to us and we’re interested, These two truly showed what it means to be a Wewoka Tiger. Having your teammates back and facing any obstacle head on said Wewoka athletic director Cody Barlow.
Our team was in a very tough situation and two senior softball players came to help us make sure we didn’t have to forfeit a district game. They showed their loved for their school and our community in an incredible way. These two girls started the week softball players and tonight they became football players. While the scoreboard might not have shown it tonight we won by getting to play and none of that is possible without their contributions on the field said Wewoka head coach Brian Couch.
Well at first me and my friend were super excited about it but when it came closer to time to play we were super nervous and we didn’t really know what to expect but as soon as we got on the field it felt like I have been playing the sport my whole life and in reality I’ve only thrown a football with my brother, That’s as close as I’ve got to a football. My reaction was like super excited like I was filled with joy like I had no idea that I was going to do such a thing but I went out there and I gave it my all, No matter if I was a girl or not I was going to do my best with whatever came in my way and I am thankful that the coaches let me play said Natalie Davis.
It was pretty hard to play softball this year because most days we only had eight to nine players which just like the football boys it’s hard to play without enough players or even extra players in case of injuries. I wanted to show my fellow athletes and students that it’s okay to go out and play a sport you have never played before just so your hometown team wouldn’t have to forfeit their games or even the season. You don’t necessarily have to be good at the sport but be willing to go out there, have fun and give it your all. The support we both received last night was amazing and we never expected anything, we just wanted to help said Callie Ramsey.
Davis would end up winning the starting kicker and punter position and she punted a 42 yarder on her first attempt of the game while Ramsey played on wide receiver, safety and on kickoff
