Obviously Class 2A is a shell of what it use to be. Back in the year 2000 2A was a much better class as a whole but this year and the past several years, 2A has been awful and just not very competitive but is A really that much better than 2A? This clearly is a matter of opinion but let’s take a look:
Class A Top 5 Schools
1. Caddo vs 2A - 3-0
2A Opponents - Savannah, Coalgate (x2), Colbert
2A Opponents combined record 14-19
Caddo has played 0 Ranked 2A teams but they beat winless Coalgate twice.
Strength of Schedule vs 2A teams grade: F
Record vs top 20: 2-0
Games against ranked Opponents: 3
Caddo hasn't played very many ranked opponents. Wins over #19 Wright City (A) and #8 Kinta (B) are their only games against ranked opponents. They do have a matchup vs. #2 Rattan later on in the year. Their overall strength of schedule is pretty weak.
2. Rattan vs 2A - 4-0
2A Opponents - Calera, Coalgate, Wilburton, #6 Pocola, #10 Haworth
2A Opponnets combined record 26-30
Rattan has played two pretty bad 2A squads but have beaten a good Pocola team and will play a decent probably overrated Haworth team.
Strength of Schedule vs 2A teams grade: B
Record vs top 20: 5-1
Games against ranked opponents: 9
Rattan has played the more difficult schedule than Caddo. Wins over #6 Pocola (2A) and #9 Choctaw (3A) and their only loss in the top 20 was to 3A's #11 team Hugo in the Choctaw Invitational Tournament. They still have games to be played again 3 top 20 teams in Class B, 2A, and A with a game again Caddo later this month. Rattans strength of schedule isn't awful but it could be better.
3. Vanoss vs 2A - 2-0
2A Opponents - #9 Latta, #16 Wynnewood, #17 Stratford
2A Opponents combined record 21-20
Vanoss will have played three top 20 teams in 2A haven beaten two of them. Latta is probably overrated and given a top ten spot for what they did
last year. Either way great games by Vanoss.
Strength of Schedule vs 2A teams grade: B+
Record vs top 20: 5-0
Games against ranked opponents: 9
Vanoss like Rattan has played a more difficult schedule than Caddo. Wins again #9 Latta (2A), #11 Allen (A), #1 Roff (B), and #5 Kinta (B) really separates them apart from other schools as those are teams in the top 10 at the time they played them. They still have games against #10 Allen (A), #2 Roff (B), #17 Stratford (2A), and the grand finale vs #1 Dale (2A). Vanoss plays a very competitive schedule especially late in the year.
4. Okay vs 2A - 5-0
2A Opponents - Hulbert (x2), #2 Preston, Haskell (x2), Warner, Wilburton
2A Opponents combined record 20-34
Outside of Okays matchup against Preston they have played some terrible 2A teams. If you take Preston out of the equation the combined record of their 2A Opponents is 10-31. They did however beat Preston by 8 in the Preston tournament on Dec. 10th. I'd love to see them play now.
Strength of Schedule vs 2A teams grade: D
Record vs top 20: 1-1
Games against ranked opponents: 4
Okay has played a pretty crummy schedule. Not too many tough teams, however, they did beat #2 Preston (2A) which is their most impressive win but they followed that up with a loss to #13 Keys-Parkhill (3A). They do play #18 Gore (A) and #19 Inola (4A) left on their schedule. Overall, I'm not too impressed with this top 4 teams schedule. Its dookie.
5. Seiling vs 2A - 2-0
2A Opponents - #20 Fairview, #15 Cashion, #19 Hinton, #13 Hooker, Watonga
2A Opponents combine record 29-25
Impressive 2A schedule. All top 20 teams besides Watonga. They are playing the better 2A teams around their area. Their matchup late in the season vs Hinton and vs. Hooker will really tell the story of how their playoffs will go. Seiling played Hooker last year in Enid and lost by 19.
Strength of Schedule vs 2A teams grade: B+
Record vs top 20: 4-0
Games against ranked Opponents: 8
Seiling has an impressive resume, however, most of the ranked teams they have played have been outside of #4 Texhoma (who was probably overrated) are okay teams in their class but they're not the best. They did play #18 Vici (B) pretty close then they blew #4 Texhoma (A) out. In that game I'm assuming they played better than what they really are being that they were playing in the championship game of the Ward Classic in Seiling.
Overall the top 5 schools in class A have played a total of 33 ranked teams in all classes. The schools are 16-0 against 2A teams with a combined record of 110-128 amongst 2A teams played. I'm rather disappointed that the top 5 schools in this class have only played 33 ranked teams as of right now. In my opinion that is not good. I am real impressed with Vanosses end of the year schedule. They would be my pick to win Class A. I'd call Rattan vs. Vanoss in the finals in Class A.
Now lets look at the top 5 schools in Class 2A.
Class 2A top 5 schools
1. Dale vs Class A - 1-0
Class A opponents - Talihina, Vanoss
Class A opponent combined record 19-11
Dale will only play two schools in Class A. Talihina is a cupcake but #2 Vanoss (A) is the real deal.
Strength of schedule vs Class A grade: A-
Record vs top 20: 9-0
Games against ranked opponents: 13
Dale has played an absolutely brutal schedule and have been victorious in all 18 games. They are bound to lose and when they do I imagine this board to go crazy because everyone loves to hate the Pirates. To put in perspective Dale will have played 13 ranked opponents where as the top 5 in Class A have played 33 combined. Like Vanoss in A, Dale has a tough end of the year schedule that will surely prepare them for a deep playoff run.
2. Preston vs Class A - 2-1
Class A opponents - #6 Okarche, #6 Okay, Hominy
Class A opponent combined record: 31-6
Preston has played two top 10 teams in Class A both who were ranked #6 at the time they played them. Then they played a below average to average Hominy team. Still not a bad schedule for a top team to play other top teams in a different class.
Strength of Schedule vs Class A grade: A
Record vs top 20: 5-3
Games vs ranked opponents: 11
Preston has played a rough schedule. Six out of the 8 games of the teams in the top 20 have been top 10 teams in their respective class. They'll finish their season going against several 3A schools playing #10 Kellyville (3A) twice and #19 Henryetta (3A). Overally a pretty difficult schedule, playing larger schools and the smaller schools they have face were top 10 teams or the more competitive teams.
3. Hennessey vs Class A - 3-0
Class A opponents - Thomas, #6 Okarche (x2), #17 Regent Prep, Oklahoma Bible,
Class A opponent combined record: 20-25
Like many of the class A schools, Hennessey has played a pretty weak Class A schedule outside of Okarche. Thomas, Regent Prep, and OBA have 7 wins combined. Regent Prep in all fairness plays a pretty savage schedule playing 12 ranked teams. Hennessey has taken care of business and has won their games against the class A schools and that rematch again Okarche on the 17th of this month should be a good one if you want to go watch good basketball.
Strength of Schedule vs Class A grade: D+
Record vs top 20: 3-2
Games vs ranked opponents: 8
Not near as many games against ranked opponents as the top two teams but still respectable. Have Played a top 5 team in #4 Crooked Oak (3A) and #13 Kellyville (3A) which are good opponents. I'd like to have seen Hennessey play Kingfisher and Seiling to really put their schedule over the top. Hennessey looks to be overrated but they are coached well and have made the 2A state championship game after many thinking they were overrated before.
4. Oklahoma Christian Academy vs Class A - 1-0
Class A Opponents - #14 Frontier, #20 Southwest Covenant
Class A opponent combined record: 19-7
Not impressive but both schools are ranked in the top #20 and both have winning records. Much better schedule amongst Class A opponents than Hennessey's.
Strength of schedule vs Class A grade: B
Record vs top 20: 4-3
Games vs ranked opponents: 10
OCA has played one of the more difficult schedules having to play #1 Dale (2A) twice, #1 Milwood (3A), #2 Crossings Christian (4A), #2 Preston (2A), #7 Pocola (2A), #8 Oklahoma Christian School (4A). Yikes. I can see why people say 2A is down when the top schools are playing 7 games agains top 10 opponents in their respective classes. In these games so far OCA is 2-5 with games against Dale and Pocola remaining.
5. Oktaha vs Class A - 3 -0
Class A Opponents - Liberty, Weleetka, Red Oak (x2)
Class A Opponent combined record: 25-14
Not an impressive Class A schedule but all teams do have a winning record. A matchup with #4 Okay (A) seems pretty reasonable. I'm not sure why they didn't match up and I'm sure both teams would have liked too.
Strength of schedule vs Class A grade: C-
Record vs top 20: 0-1
Games vs ranked opponents: 5
The worst out of the top schools in Class 2A when it comes to playing opponents in the top 20. Not sure they belong here as I believe there are other schools that are better but they have more losses. Those schools with more losses have played more ranked teams.
Overall the top 5 schools in Class 2A have played 47 games against ranked opponents. That's 14 more games against ranked opponents than the top 5 teams in Class A. Top teams in 2A haven't played many teams in Class A but outside of Hennessey and Oktaha the teams have played a pretty competitive schedule against Class A schools. The combined record vs Class A Schools is 114-63. As you can see Class 2A has played more competitive Class Schools rather than class A schools have played against 2A schools. That to me tells me that 2A is seeking competition. How can a class be down if they are seeking quality competition?
Also I know this isn’t the be all end all but on paper Class 2A looks far more competitive than A at least from a top 5 perspective.
Class A Top 5 Schools
