1-McAlester
2-Del City
3-McGuinness
4-Coweta
5-Guthrie
6-Carl Albert
7-Grove
8-Collinsville
9-MacArthur
10-Midwest City
11-Elgin
12-Sapulpa
I have watched him for 4 years now so you'd think I'd learn, but I will not be picking against McAlester again as long as Erik McCarty is stepping on the field. He is the best high school football player I've seen in person, supplanting Austin Box in my mind.
Since covid happened this is as deep as 5A has been, with the top 5-6ish all having very real shots to make it to Edmond and win it. Should make for a very fun postseason.
More thoughts
-District 1 is a mess. MWC and MacArthur are the top 2 (I think), but then what to make of Elgin, Noble, El Reno, and Ardmore... Elgin looks to be in the driver seat for a playoff berth among the 4, with Ardmore being in the biggest hole now. El Reno over Noble 41-40 and Elgin over Ardmore 35-0 (!) tonight I didnt see coming.
-McGuinness @ Guthrie and McAlester @ Coweta this coming week are the two premier matchups, I think McG-Gut is for the district crown. We might be thinking McAlester and McGuinness are the states top 2 teams by this time next week. Piedmont will be 4th in district 2.
-Del City played great until late against McA, I felt they didnt give McCarty enough attention on those last 2 scoring drives. And then once it got to overtime your not going to stop him for 4 straight plays. Regardless of how district 3 plays out, they will go 3-0 in the 1st round matchups. Sapulpa should finish 4th here.
-Grove and Collinsville look to be the best in district 4 and their week 8 matchup should be for the district crown. As i mentioned before, dont think the loser of that game gets past the 3 seed in week 11.
Along with Elgin, Tulsa Rogers is the best story of the season. They are now in a good position to make the playoffs, Bishop Kelley will finish 3rd and then it may come down to Rogers and Claremore for the last berth, but I'd favor the Tulsa school.
