I've seen the Tuttle played Wagoner closer than Clinton last year argument quite a bit, but no one mentions that Clinton won their semifinal game against a Blanchard team that shut out Tuttle for a district title last year. You can't use the Wagoner argument for why Tuttle would beat Clinton this year and then turn around and say Poteau would beat Clinton this year even though Clinton won at Poteau last year. It's a new season. Cushing got smoked last year by Wagoner and this year I would favor Cushing over Wagoner. Weatherford also had a player last year who is currently playing at OU who left with an injury during the Cushing game while Weatherford was still winning and they were undefeated headed into the playoffs. All of that to say Tuttle still might be the best team, but lets not crown them yet. Heck, I wouldn't count out Cushing in a rematch with them.
I never said Poteau would beat Clinton. I said I hadn’t seen either team play, and never even saw Poteau last year so there was no way for me to make any assumption on who would win that game. All I said was the way people talk about Poteau on here, which is all I have to go by, is that I would lean towards Poteau. I’m sure it would be a great game and Clinton might win considering they beat them last year and did return quite a bit. But as I said, I haven’t seen Clinton this year and haven’t seen Poteau either year so I would refrain from making a prediction should those two play.
Yes, Cushing did get “smoked” by Wagoner last year. Clinton got “smoked” by them by 3 points more.
Clinton also lost to district champ Weatherford at home, while Cushing traveled to Weatherford and beat them. Yes, I know Downs got hurt. But Cushing knocked him out of the game with his ankle injury. Although, if you’d have been there, you would have seen him walking around on the sidelines. He could’ve gone back in, but am assuming he chose not to due to not wanting to jeopardize his OU career. Which I don’t blame him, considering he is getting substantial playing time as a true freshman.
Clinton lost to 5th place Bethany by 4, while Cushing beat them by 25.
All of this to say it probably doesn’t mean squat as this is indeed a new year. But like I said, if Clinton did get a whole bunch better, maybe they can hang with or beat Tuttle. If they didn’t improve substantially, then I just can’t see them hanging with Tuttle. But I have not seen them play this year, so I don’t know. I do know that Cushing did get a whole bunch better (that’s what happens when over half of your starters were sophomores-they mature and your team improves) and that is why they played Tuttle much closer this year than last.
