The top teams were area champions or runner ups last year and have enough coming back to justify top spots. I think 2A is wide open and with Covid this season it could be a number of teams winning it.
1. Dale- will have one of the top back courts in the state with Dallen Forsythe and younger brother who is a freshman. Combined with Jones and Crowe who started at different times in the year and you have an experienced team that is knocking on the door. They did lose the 6'7" post in Thompson who impacted both sides of the floor. Dale is always in contention and should be a slight favorite heading into the year .
2. Minco- Another team that returns there entire back court and has experience getting to the state tournament. Burchfield and Shirley are a guard combo that are explosive and are right there with dale with top back courts . Minco lost 2 starters last year Morrison and Brummell but return the rest of the team. They are long/ athletic and have enough back to be a contender.
3. Hooker- 3 state tournament appearances is impressive. They lost there best 2 from last year in Coaches son Kerr and the Stalder. Will be hard to replace those two but Kerr always seems to do it. Return Metcalf (6'4") and Cathcart (6'2"). I feel like anytime Hooker has those names in line up (older brothers/ dads maybe) they have a shot. Hooker will have length and athletes to defend. Big question who will step to score?
4. Cashion- Returns another good backcourt In Jenkins and Rainy. Jenkins is one of the top guards in state and Rainy is a lock down defender. Cashion did lose 3 starters in Woody, Nbavi, and roberts. Woody impacted the game on both ends of the floor and will be missed. Cashion did play a lot of kids last year which will pay off for them this year.
5. Pawnee - Surprised a lot of people with getting to the state tournament with such a young team. Return there entire team led by Gordon . Pawnee has shooters that can space the floor and a coach who has done it multiple times. Last year I thought they were a longshot to win it at state, this year I think they are a legit contender.
6. Howe - Were one of the hottest teams last season. They did lose Stimac 6'5 post who anchored there pressure deffense and will be missed. They do return there gurads in Oglesby, Lynn and Coggins. Those 3 could have them back in the mix. They did have a couple foreign exchange kids that played but not for sure if they were able to return this season. Early season loss to Wright City is a head scratcher? This season though I think it could happen too a lot of the top teams.
7. Wewoka- I would say the most athleitic team in 2a. Lost on a last second shot to Howe in area last year or I think would have been in the state tournament. Stephenson kid is a freak athlete and good player. It was mentioned though he might have gotten hurt in football last game? I hope it was not true.
8. Mangum- Another athletic team. Really aggressive and were impressive at times last season. Did lose two of the most freakish athletes in state. Laughlin and I cant remember the other kids name. Just saw him drop step dunk at will last season. They return all there guards who were quick and played hard. I read on another forum where they might have gotten a couple of move-ins too.
9. Pawhuska- Return most of the team from what I have heard and a new coach who brings his 6'3" son with him. They were knocking on the door of state last year and could very easily break into it this season. Never saw there team play last season but from what I heard could make some noise this year.
10. Hennessey- Dropping down from 3a and two years ago were state runner up in 2a. Always a contender but they did lose there stud guard last season. Program is use to winning and should still be a factor in 2A
11. Ok Union- Lost a few to graduation but still has some good ones back. Were ranked high last season but fell short. Played a lot of kids so should have enough back to contend for a state tournament.
12. OCA- Return their leading scorer and big post back from last season. Wont have as much depth but play a tough schedule which will have them ready for playoffs
13. Nowata- went 19-6 last season and return their leading scorer in Price. One of the top offensive players in state. With a lot of experience surrounding him should have them being a factor in 2A
14. Ampo- 20 win season last year could be a spring board to make a bigger jump this year. They do lose their best player but return everyone else. Will be guard oriented but should be in the talk.
15. Calera- Cinderlla story last season thru playoffs. Avenged losses from earlier in the season to make it one game away from state. They return all the main players from last season and could be one of the top teams in class. The big post might be the best post in class.
16. Silo- The addition of two 6'7 players will help turn around Silo immediately.
17. Hobart- Played mainly freshman and sophomores last season so should be improved. Moore kid is a nice player that should have so more help this season.
18. Okemah- One game away from state but lost their top players. Going off tradition here. Kids our use to winning.
19. Oktaha- New coach in Warden brings his sons to the mix.
20. Watonga- Lost best player from last season but returns everyone else.
21. Hulbert
22. Frederick
23. Hinton
24. Latta
25. Merritt
