John Marshall will begin its search for its third coach in three seasons.
Aso Pogi is leaving the program after one season. The former Oklahoma State and Central Oklahoma quarterback guided the Bears to a 7-4 record in 2019, falling to eventual state runner-up Plainview in the Class 3A playoffs.
Pogi's resignation came after receiving a five-game suspension for violating OSSAA rules, multiple sources told The Oklahoman. Pogi was sanctioned twice within a seven-day period for overseeing independent quarterback camps during a period when coaches of OSSAA member schools weren't permitted to have contact with athletes.
The OSSAA canceled all activities until June 1 on March 26, which prohibits coaches in any sport from interacting with athletes in seventh thru 12th grade.
Pogi decided last week to resign, but it didn’t become official until Monday, sources said.
Oklahoma City Public Schools athletic director Todd Dilbeck and Pogi declined to comment.
Pogi was John Marshall's offensive coordinator in 2017 under head coach Rashaun Woods, helping guide the Bears to the Class 3A state championship. He then left to coach at Mustang for a year as its offensive coordinator before accepting a job at Putnam West in December 2018 to become the next head coach.
He never signed the contract or went to the school, so when John Marshall offered him the head coach position two months later after Woods left to take the same post in Enid, Pogi returned to the Bears.
He previously coached at Elgin and Cache.
"It has been good for me," Pogi told The Oklahoman of his time at John Marshall. "I'm gonna miss those kids, man. I had an excellent time there."
John Marshall's next coach will inherit a program making the jump to Class 4A next season. With returning stars like top recruit Bryce Stephens and Devin Johnson, the Bears are primed to compete yet again.
