Private schools are willing to go to any lengths to play small public schools because winning is the name of the game in the human experience. History doesn't remember what you paid, who you recruited, how you kept your numbers low, only that you were successful. Every parent wants their child to experience success. Do you blame them? Some parents will even pay large sums to ensure their children experience "success." In order to ensure your child experiences "success," you have the have the illusion of competition. I truly believe private school parents are oblivious to their advantages. Let's be honest, why should they care? They don't owe any rural Oklahoma kid anything. Win, win, win, that is the goal.
Privates want to play public schools to have controlled opposition. You can't "win" unless there is another team, on the other side, attempting not to lose. Once the whistle blows kids are going to play. What I love about public school kids, true public-school kids who play for their communities, is once the game starts, they are going to try to beat these privates against all the odds. I think we owe it to our public-school kids to fight back and that the time is NOW!
We must realize how powerful private schools are and what they will do to keep their thumb on the scales. They will act as if we are on the same team until it matters. They will act only within the confines of the OSSAA until it matters. If they can't win there, however, they will use their political influence and resources to win. The OSSAA, honestly, may be too infected to be cured at this point. I think they are just now realizing the monster they helped create.
I believe public schools should not be afraid to break from the OSSAA. Yes, it will take courage from every coach, administer, and parent who leads on this. But who cares how many teams join at first, at least you fought for something. Be a part of history. It may be rough for the first few years, but it will be for the best. If schools are truly prepared and willing to do this, maybe then private schools will realize. They will realize even though they control the deck, they over played their hand.
Having said all this, heck I know its just football. FREEDOM!!!!!!!! lol
