A state senator from the Tulsa area has filed a bill to be heard in the 2020 legislative session that proposes school districts with a team playing in a championship should choose the location of the championship game.
Sen. J.J. Dossett, D-Sperry, filed Senate Bill 1111 in regards to the Class 6A-I state football championship game between Owasso and Jenks being played at UCO's Wantland Stadium instead of in the Tulsa area. Owasso is in Dossett's district.
The bill doesn't specify any single sport in its wording. If passed, the change in wording would be: "Participating school districts to choose the location of state championship games or contests. If the participating school districts cannot agree on a location, the (OSSAA) shall choose."
The 2020 legislative session begins in February.
In November, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association announced it would host all 11-man state championship games at Wantland Stadium. The decision came after the Oklahoma Football Coaches Association went to the OSSAA asking for a centralized championship site.
Coaches from across the state, including the Tulsa area, were in favor of the centralized site.
Owasso defeated Jenks 14-6 to win its second state championship in three years on Dec. 7. Official attendance numbers haven't been released, though it was one of the larger crowds of the seven contests during the two championship weekends.
