The VYPE magazine is a joke. I know that is not a new statement. And I have known that for years. But every year I pick up the Pigskin Preview, albeit later this year than I normally do.
But there are just so many things wrong with it, from wrong names to stats that were mentioned correctly in one section, then totally off in the next.
And the biggest thing that makes it a joke. We all know the preseason rankings are hard to do, but they’re not terrible. However, the top 4 teams, Cashion, Rejoice, Thomas, and Stroud, are all omitted from the All-Vype first team (they only do one team). Stroud and Rejoice both have their QBs listed as athletes, so essentially has them listed as 2nd and 3rd teamers.
And the kid VYPE chose as the first team QB had way worse numbers than the Stroud and Rejoice QBs.

It's because he used to play QB at Enid and has offers from D1 schools. They always put those kids over the ones who imo are frankly better and put up way better stats against the same competition or even better. They also pick guys based on their size as well because Danchez Patterson is one of if not the best athlete in the entire class but because he is only 5'7 145 they will always pick someone over guys like him because of it. Also like 85% of the players they have listed every year are around the OKC area.
Eh. Barron Winter, OBA, is the first-team QB. He played his junior season at OBA. He was at Enid his freshman and sophomore seasons, but did not start. So yes, he played at 6A Enid, but sat the bench.
Here’s the numbers for the 3 QB’s mentioned:
Grant Elerick, Stroud 181-265 68% 2,710 yards 32 TD 11 INT Riley Winter, Rejoice 139-239 58% 2,890 yards 21 TD 5 INT Barron Winter, OBA 124-230 53% 1,571 yards 15 TD 9 INT
I’m just saying. That’s a horrible pick for first team and ruins any credibility those guys have as high school sports reporters. In the end, I could care less, as could the Stroud players. They care about team success over individual accolades. Just trying to spark some interest on this page and get people talking.
dtrain, where does Barron Winter have D1 offers from? Just curious. Grant Elerick is no slouch either, boasting offers from 3 D2s and a JUCO.

He has offers mainly from Ivy League and Military schools. I know he went on his college visit to Princeton back in the spring. Even tho he was the back-up his first 2 years many thought he would be the starting QB at Enid before he moved to OBA right before his junior year started. With Enid being a 6A school even back-ups who hardly play get D1 offers i see it happen all of the time. I'm sure he wishes he was still at Enid seeing now that Rashaun woods is their new Head Coach after being the head man at John Marshall the last couple years. I'm telling you these Vype guys and other media outlets don't look at stats they look at the players size and determine where they should be. Will Amos was the best QB in class A and one of the best in the entire state his SR year but they All-Stated him at DB and not QB like they should've because of his size and Amos was an average DB at best no way he should of All-Stated at DB over others who were a lot better at that position than him.

The whole Vype thing is a bunch of bull that's why i stop reading it years ago. For years they have been giving guys unnecessary praise over guys who really should be getting all the praise. They have a kid from Elmore City on their 1st team OL who was a freshman last year but because he is 6'4 300 he gets first team over a guy like Araldo Hernendez from Wynnewood who will be a 4 year starter this year and has been the best OL on their team all 4 years including that year they went to the state championship in 2016 as a freshman and in Powerlifting this past year he was one of the strongest kids in the entire state. They don't see that they see he is only 5'9 260 so they will put the kid who has only played 1 year of high school football over him because he doesn't meet their "size requirements". IMO Elerick and Patterson are 2 of the best Offensive players in the entire class and it's ashame they both got left off the 1st team Offense and the fact they don't have Patterson on here at all was shocking because every other media outlet talks about him. The kid runs a 4.39 40 for crying out loud and probably would of won state in the 100m if he hadn't false started.

Outside of the sales staff at VYPE, no one takes it seriously. People buy the preview because Vype makes sure to name so many kids (some actually the correct names). Vype 100 is ridiculous, All-Vype for each class is almost humorous, and rankings are often bewildering.... but hey, your kid's name might be in it - so you better go buy one. SMH

I really don't see the issue with VYPE. Most people know that its not accurate and it's really cool for the kids to get their name mentioned a magazine. If anything, maybe it motivates that kid, or a kid in junior high to get his name mentioned. Its not all bad. Like what we do on here, its just somebodies opinion.

I like it for the most part. And I’ve been buying it for 10+ years and will continue because it’s about the only thing out there short of this forum where someone can get info on high school football. Yes there might be some mistakes here and there, but it is what is. I’m not saying they have to have a perfect magazine because that would be next to impossible with the amount of teams there are to cover. Just wish they would take a look at the stats and factor them in when making they all-vype team.

It gets people talking about HS Football and kids get excited to see their names (if they are listed correctly). I see these as good things. The point is that some act as if Vype is the HS Football Bible and in reality the opinions, rankings, etc. are terrible and uninformed. It makes me laugh a little when other uninformed people base their opinions or give reference to Vype's magazine.
Vype exists to sell the Mag and sell Advertising. Listing as many kids as possible and spreading the love around is the best way to profit and sell both. That is much more important than being accurate or having informed opinions.
I agree that Vype is at the same level as this forum. It's just a few guys (myself included) spouting their opinions, but at least on here, it's free.
VYPE is located in Tulsa, and is the product of a former Tulsa U. player. This is not Oklahoma, and it is not Oklahoma football. But in any case, VYPE has a long-standing business relationship with OSSAA that isn't going to change in the near future. So there ya go. VYPE is solely responsible for Gore's being placed in the pre-season class A top ten. I mean, c'mon! VYPE just makes itself thereby a statewide joke!

Vype is positioned to be such a great publication and without any real competition, but sadly they do sloppy work. Let's hope that one day Vype will figure it out - or that someone else will - and OK will have a good, reliable source for HS football/ sports info with legitimate and educated opinions. FOr now... it is what it is.
Oklahoma VYPE will never be Dave Campbell's Texas Football. First, they don't have the staff to cover all the state and secondly they don't have the circulation to hire that staff. They rely on coaches to send in info. We should probably be happy we have anything here and be grateful we're reading about football.
Regardless I think it’s pretty neat. As far as the top ten, it’s a joke. As far as the stars, probably also a joke but doesn’t Vype do that thing where you vote on a player. When you read the magazine, you take what you like from it, and the rest you laugh at or don’t bother with it.

Good point. I'm one of those who laugh at, or otherwise choose not to bother with it, in your words. I'm probably wrong in that, but I can't seem to help myself. Seems like our little peewee team in Ringling will be playing several teams this year that are several classes above us and at least a hundred miles away. This seems kind of "nutty" to me for several reasons, but, hey, what do I know? The youngsters in charge of all of this will have to learn their lessons the hard way, I guess. So be it.
Don't take Vype's word for anything or you will get burned like I did. My fault I should have fact checked though but it still would be nice if the publication was somewhat factual. Had Carl Albert's 5 year record wrong for 16 showed them 11-1 instead of 13-1 and as a result I was wrong on their current win streak. What I get for taking the easy way out. Wonder who made the mistake Vype or the Carl Albert coaches who submitted their write up for the team to Vype. Oh well live and learn. The main reason I started getting it was the early look at all the schedules together instead of waiting until the previews in the Tulsa World and Oklahoman come out in late August. Wonder if they gave themselves an extra month, would it help? Put it out mid August instead of mid July. Maybe give them more time to edit and research but what do I know.

Lol....it happens. I’ve never have bought the magazine. Usually just skim through the Class A portion after someone else buys it. I really like iwasatthegame.com. Good source for your history unless you’re looking for something before 1999.
